The biggest mistake that people make when setting goals is that they actually set them too small. It is easier to hit a bigger goal than it is to hit a smaller goal. And today we're going to walk you through why that is, how to set a goal and how to actually hit a goal way beyond what you could ever believe, think or imagine you could have done. In life, it is so important to set big hairy goals. And that term was actually coined by Jim Collins. Why is it important to set big hairy goals? Well, think about.
00:26
You don't know the limits of your potential. When you start to set goals that are far beyond what you can think or imagine, you actually start to reach new levels of your potential. I want you to think about if you are in a jungle and there is a tiger chasing you. What will you do? Well, you think about how to run faster, jump higher, do whatever you can to get away from the angry, aggressive tiger right behind you.
00:53
And that is the same thing when you are setting big hairy golds. It allows you to not get complacent and you're always pushing and stretching to get away from the tiger. Otherwise he is going to eat you. And that's the same thing that happens when we're setting golds.
01:08
And I think what's important is if you set a goal that you kind of already know how to hit it, you already know the activities, it's more, you're gonna just do more of what you're already doing. Whereas if you're running from the tiger, if you're setting a goal way outside of your comfort zone, it's going to force you to think with new creative ideas, new creative solutions, new ways. And so when you actually set that bigger goal, it makes you think differently than you have been thinking. Because if you're going to do a hundred times more revenue over the next two years,
01:34
You have to think of completely different ways to acquire clients, to increase lifetime, but all of these different pieces. And so the number one value that goes into setting a goal so big that you don't actually know how to hit it is that it forces you to think creatively and it actually activates your subconscious mind to go to work for you. So when you're in the shower, you get that idea. When you're, when you're in the car, you get the idea. So here are the four reasons why it is actually easier to set big hairy goals than it is to set small ones.
02:03
Number one is motivation. When you are going after a big, hairy goal, you are motivated. It's exciting. It's inspiring. When you're going after baby little goals, you may take a few steps and a few actions here and there, but you're not excited. There's no passion. There's no excitement and fulfillment to do whatever it takes to hit the goal. So setting big, hairy goals is motivating. It's inspiring. You do any kind of.
02:30
business goal, adventure, anything you're trying to do, you're going to face massive challenges and ups and downs and complexities in the road. You need something that is going to be a stronger emotional driver, something so exciting that it makes sense of the pains and the problems and the challenges you have. Otherwise, when you face those challenges, you're going to go, I don't think it's worth it because it's not. You didn't set a big enough goal. So set a goal.
02:54
that is going to always be worth the difficulties and the challenges and the struggles and the ups and downs you are going to face trying to reach towards your potential and reach towards your goals. The second reason is focus. Sitting big goals allows you to prioritize and focus on the right things so that each one of your daily decisions and daily actions is in alignment with that big hairy goal.
03:21
When you're setting small goals, it's easy to get distracted. There's so many little things that you could be doing, but when you have that big goal, there is clear alignment in where you are headed. Especially when you think about focus, what's really important is to, there's, there's no self-made success. Everything is people-made. You, you know, we don't build the business. We build people and the people build the business. So when you have focus, when you have here specifically what we're
03:45
we're going after and that vision and that mission and that goal is inspiring to people. When it's focused, you could rally people around that focused vision, mission and goal and get people excited and that alone will propel not just you, but the people around you. And when you have people around you excited about this focused mission, it's actually going to push you even on the days that you're down. You're going to have people around you that are excited. And this is that's really how you have some of the most successful people as they're building.
04:14
vision a mission that's focused and then so inspiring that other people want to get behind it they want to get on it they want to Get all about it And that's going to be very important if you want people to help you build this thing is to have a very Focused focused goal the number three reason why you want to set a really big goal is growth You know if you go to the gym, and you just lift a little bit of weights You're never going to grow if you're trying to run a marathon, and you're like. I'm just going to run a mile a day
04:40
you're never going to get the endurance to grow. When it comes to setting a big goal, you're going to have to force yourself to new levels and new boundaries that you've never hit before. And that'll force you to go beyond what you're ever gonna do when you're setting a small goal. I'll give you an example. You know, I grew up snowboarding in Colorado, and I always said, if you come home and you don't have some bruises and some bumps on you, you did not push towards the boundaries of your potential. And so you wanna set a goal that's going to constantly force you to
05:10
to push past your boundaries and you're gonna make mistakes and there's gonna be hard days, but that is exactly where growth is going to happen. The beautiful thing about setting big hairy goals is the person you become on the journey. You learn new skills, you grow in character, in mindset, in that relentless spirit and pursuit. There is a person that you become when you are setting big hairy goals and that is part of growth.
05:36
Number four is achievement because when you set a goal way beyond what you thought you could do and then you hit that goal, the amount of confidence that you build in yourself to create, you start to expand your belief and your belief in what you're able to do and achieve in life. And not only is that very fulfilling, but it also opens up a whole new world of what's really possible in your life. And I'll give an example of some of our teammates. So at our company.
06:01
We go over all the personal, the professional, and the financial goals of all of our teammates, and we mentor them and help them achieve them. We have people that came in that they set five-year goals, and in six months with the company, in six months they're hitting their five-year goals. What do you think that does to the mindset when you just turn your five-year goal and you accomplish it in six months? Well, it allows you to start creating bigger and bigger goals, and that builds momentum, so you're gonna hit your goals faster and stronger, and they're gonna keep.
06:28
getting exponentially bigger and you're gonna be hitting them exponentially faster. Achievement is one of those things that builds momentum on the way to your goals. And if you have momentum, that is the driving force and the driving factor to what leads to more and more success and more and more achievements. Those were the four reasons why it is so much better to set big, hairy goals than it is to set small goals. Now let's talk about
06:55
how do you actually put this into practice? Here are five ways or five steps that you can start setting big, hairy goals today. Step number one is to identify one big goal that you want to go after. Think about...
07:10
Who do you want to become? Where do you see yourself in your health, relationships, business, etc. And I want you to think big here. Step number two is you want to make sure you take your goal, you lay it out. And once it's all done and it's pretty and this is what I want to do, I want you to two to three times the size of that goal, because remember that's going to create a higher level of inspiration and it's going to number two, make you
07:33
think creatively. Step number three is to find other people who have already hit that goal. Use them as inspiration. Follow their journey. See how they got there and what they're doing now to maintain their goals. Seeing other people who have already hit the goal gives you inspiration and it shows you what is possible. Step number four is to write down your why. The why is the big reason and motivator behind why you even want to achieve this big.
08:02
carry goal in the first place. Your why is that driving factor internally, the real why that's going to keep you motivated when things get challenging on the journey to your goal. Because trust me, they will. Constantly revisit this why when things get tough. Maybe for you, it's to set your parents up for success when they retire. Maybe you have a burning desire to reach your potential. Maybe you want to make impact. Whatever that big why is for you,
08:30
Write it down and keep it at the full front as you are pursuing your big hairy goal. And what was really important on this is the find your why and be inspired. It's actually can be super cliche and a lot of times people do this wrong. And if you ever find yourself saying I want to do this because if you're ever trying to explain why you want to do something, why you want to hit a goal, a lot of times what you'll find is at the root of that is you're actually trying to justify the things that you want.
08:57
And when we talk about your real why, it's like, what do you truly actually like not seeking anybody else's approval or anything else? What do you really, truly, truly, truly want? What's the thing that you're going to you're going to see it is going to excite you. Step number five is identify one step you can take this week. Now we do at the time of this recording, we're doing sales trainings every week for our clients and their sales teams and all that. And I always tell them don't come here to be entertained. Come here to.
09:22
get at least one thing that you can apply to your sales system, your sales processes to your company that will make a difference and then come next week and get one more thing you can apply. So think about what's the one thing with one action that I could do that will get this thing moving and get it growing because when you try to make this big list and this big plan like businesses don't fail because they don't have business plans.
09:45
Businesses fail because they don't take action because they're not moving action in the right direction and when we over complicate things It's going to create procrastination. It's going to create overwhelm so find that one thing that you can attack you can do and you can stick with and you can move and then Next week find the next thing you got to do and there you have it We want you to take that one step by leaving us a comment right below this video Let us know what is that one action you are going to take in this week?
10:13
that is going to move you closer to your big hairy goal. If you love this video, make sure you leave us a thumbs up. And if you are not yet subscribed, click that subscribe button and we'll see you soon. Bye for now.
